Embedded systems run the computing devices hidden inside a vast array of everyday products and appliances such as cell phones, toys, handheld PDAs, cameras, and microwave ovens. The goal of this course is to develop a comprehensive understanding of the technologies behind the embedded systems design. The students develop an appreciation of the existing capabilities and limitations of various steps in overall design methodology - modeling/specification, exploration, partitioning, synthesis ( hardware /software / interface ), and validation/verification of embedded systems.
The objective of this course is to present techniques for the concurrent design, or co-design, of embedded systems that are dedicated to specific applications and consist of tightly coupled hardware and software components. It will discuss modern design methodologies with an emphasis on early design phases, not covered by traditional methods, including modeling, verification and system-level synthesis. It will also discuss the topics of embedded real-time systems, and power related issues at the system level. This also course includes hands-on labs to provide personal experience with the development, debugging, and simulation of the embedded system.
This course is extensive and contains many advanced concepts. The range of modules covers a full introduction to programming real-time and embedded systems concepts through to the design and implementation of real time embedded or standalone systems based on real-time operating systems and their device drivers. Real time Linux (RTLinux) is used as an example of such a system. The modules include an introduction to the development of Linux device drivers.
The design of the modules is intended to provide an in-depth training specifically on RTLinux or Linux kernel internals this set of modules is geared more towards providing the groundwork for approaching those domains as well as in-depth training on a specific approach.
The course contains essential information for anyone developing embedded systems such as microcontrollers, real-time control systems, mobile device, PDAs and similar applications. This course is based on many years’ experience of teaching, extensive industrial programming experience and also participation in the standards bodies that produced the standard for. We focus on the needs of day-to-day requirement of the embedded industry with the emphasis being on practical use and delivery of reliable software.
